Helping hand

You don't know what you don't know..?

Training! Some people can't get enough, for others the very word can conjure up feelings of self-doubt, inadequacy or trepidation maybe even boredom. Whatever you may feel about Continual Professional Development (CPD) it's here to stay so you might want to start thinking carefully about the type of training you feel will help you in your job.

CPD is an important part of maintaining your professional status and for many people working in social care services, it is rapidly becoming a ‘must have’. CPD allows us to take responsibility for the direction and development of our career by taking control of what we learn, if we can help guide that then training should be more focused on what we want.

We thought we'd give you a helping hand, after all, there's not a great deal around for Rehabilitation Specialists and it's difficult to know (or in some cases admit) what you don't know. We recently sent all of you an e-mail asking for your ideas about what you'd like to have. We started you off by giving you three training sessions that we hoped would promote thought and discussion in your team.

Wheelchair Mobility

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Techniques for Rehabilitation

Life Coaching for People with a Vision Impairment

These subjects were deliberately chosen as they are outside the normal 'Low vision' workshops and would provide us (hopefully) with a different approach to a variety of rehabilitative problems.

Of course, some of you may already have skills in these areas which is why we offered you the chance to state exactly what you want. All responses are treated confidentially, if you're looking for training in one particular area you can bet there'll be others looking for it too. You may feel you need updating or refreshing on a subject you studied many moons ago - let us know and we'll log it.

We'd like to build a portfolio of meaningful and useful training that will help us build the profession - why not have your say?
